7 Benefits of Lemon and Lemon Essential Oils

Today I wanted to share with you the incredible benefits of lemons, lemon oil and lemon water.  This is a superfood that we just don’t give enough attention to.  So, here are 7 ways you should be using lemon oil and fresh lemon on a regular basis.

The lemon peel might be the most beneficial part of the lemon.  Did you know that the lemon peel has the highest beneficial compounds? Lemon peel is low in calories, saturated fat and contains no cholesterol whatsoever.  It is a good source of important vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C, folate. Lemon peel is a great source of fiber and also provides us with high amounts of minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron.

So what’s the best way to get the benefits of the lemon peel?  With an essential oil.  Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from the rinds of lemons.  In fact, it takes 75  lemons to make one 15-ml bottle of lemon essential oils.  So think of the benefits you’ll receive from just a couple of drops.

Other benefits of the lemon peel include:

Benefit #1: Lemon can fight allergies

If you have allergies or chronic sinusitis, eating lemons or using lemon essential oils will help fight allergies.

Benefit #2: Lemon helps cleanse and detoxify the liver.

Lemons are sour!  In Chinese Medicine, the sour flavor helps support liver detoxification.  Why is that important?  Most of us are bombarded by toxins every day from environmental pollutants, heavy metals, and other chemicals we’re exposed to.  We are loaded and bombarded with chemicals.  Lemons and lemon oil helps nourish the liver and helps cleanse and detoxify the entire body.

Benefit #3: Lemon peel boosts immune health

Lemon oil is considered to be a good remedy for treating common ailments such as cold, flu, sore throat and other similar infections. It helps to cleanse the lymphatic system.  If you’re sick with a cold or flu, or you have swollen lymph nodes, lemon oil helps drain the junk/drainage in the back of your throat.  Lemon oil is rich in several nutrients including vitamin C, which improves your immunity and protects the body against infections and many ailments. Simply squeezing ½ a lemon into your water each day will give you ½ of your recommended daily vitamin C.

Benefit #4: Lemon peel can fight cancer

Lemon is  also used in the prevention and treatment of cancer. It contains salvestrol Q40 and limonene, which help in fighting the cancerous cells present in the body. In fact, patients going through chemotherapy benefit from using lemon oil on a daily basis.

Benefit #5: Lemon helps reduce inflammation

Lemon is a natural anti-inflammatory.  A lot of diseases today are due to inflammation.  Arthritis is inflammation of the joints.  Colitis is inflammation of the colon.  But also heart disease is inflammation of the cardiovascular system.  You’ve got to reduce inflammation!

Benefit #6: Lemon helps you digest fats

More specifically, lemon and lemon oil help you digest fat. You can add a single drop of lemon essential oils to your water before a meal and it will help support you digesting fats.

Benefit #7:  Lemon peel can help with weight loss

Lemon helps with weight loss because it helps to break down body fat.  One of the best ways to lose weight is before and after meals, opening up a bottle of lemon essential oils and take deep breaths in.  That sour and bitter notes that you’ll find will actually help reduce hunger cravings, helps with candida, and a number of other health issues.

If you want to take your health to the next level, here’s my recommendations:

  1. Consume the juice of 2 fresh lemons a day.  One in the morning when you wake up.  A whole lemon juiced in water and drink the whole glass.  And then do another lemon and drink that sometime in the afternoon between meals.  Another way that’s equally beneficial is to put 2-3 drops in 16 oz of water morning and mid afternoon instead of squeezing the juice of a whole lemon.
  2.   Take lemon oil and put it in a diffuser or take a couple of drops and dilute it with some coconut oil and put it on your body.  (NOTE:  Lemon oil is photosensitive so you don’t want to go out in the sun with lemon oil on.)
